Introducing the Baratza Encore

The Baratza Encore is a small device with a lot of grinding power. It’s a relatively small 7.5 x 7 x 14 inches and weighs under 7 pounds when empty. It is one of the quietest grinders available. Nevertheless, it has a strong grinder that spins at a speedy 405-495 revolutions per minute (RPM).

The device can hold a fairly solid 8 ounces of whole beans. This capacity is expandable to 9 ounces with an extension that can be added to the bean hopper. The Baratza Encore has an impressively large number of grind settings. The device has 40 separate grind settings available, ranging from the coarsest grinds to the finest, espresso-ready grinds. The grind setting is easily adjustable along the bottom of the hopper.

Almost all popular grinds are possible with the easily fine-tuned grind settings available. Likewise, these grinds are easily repeatable, as the grinder will not reset the settings after each grind.

Introducing the Bodum Bistro

A Bodum Bistro Review would be empty without an emphasis on variety. The Bodum Bistro is one of the only burr grinders that comes in several different colors, a perfect match for those who like to liven up their kitchen countertop. The Bodum Bistro is a small device at only 7.6 x 7.1 x 12.5 inches and lightweight at under 5 pounds when empty. The device has a relatively small number of grind settings.

You’ll find 14 grind settings on this device that offer a fair mixture between standard coarse grinds and fairly fine grinds. The Bodum Bistro has an interesting timed grind setting which allows for a set it and forget it grind.
This allows you to set the grind and walk away without having to constantly watch the grinder. The freshly ground beans will drop from the hopper into visual, clear catching bin.

The 8 ounces that this device can hold will result in 5 ounces of freshly ground beans in the catching. The catcher is also made from a borosilicate glass that helps prevent the static buildup common among burr grinders, and especially with a fine grind.

The Bodum Bistro has good features. The timed grind feature is a significant plus, adding in an element that is strongly desired on a burr grinder. Meanwhile, the borosilicate glass in the catcher offers a nice static-free finish to the grind.

That said, the Baratza simply has more options. While it does not have the borosilicate glass and a timed grind setting, the Baratza Encore simply has more features. The motor is significantly better at up to 495 RPM and the front pulse button allows for more fine tuning of the grind. The cool, quiet motor is a significant plus. The hopper extender also gives the Baratza Encore an extended amount capacity that many will find attractive.

Finally, the Baratza Encore includes an automatic, heat sensitive shutoff and a burr calibration system that ensures a better grind. As far as features go, the Bodum Bistro vs. Baratza Encore competition goes to the Baratza Encore.

We also mentioned a comparatively small device size in the Baratza Encore review as well. Both devices are around the same size in terms of dimensions. However, the Bodum Bistro is slightly lighter weight. The Bodum Bistro and the Baratza Encore are both made of rather tough plastic materials. Between the two, there are some plusses and minuses.

The Baratza Encore does not have a wholly clear catcher. This is not terrible, but the plastic does not help to eliminate cling from static. The Baratza Encore has a slower grinder which results inThe Baratza Encore does not have a wholly clear catcher. This is not terrible, but the plastic does not help to eliminate cling from static. The Baratza Encore has a slower grinder which results in less static buildup, but this may be only marginally effective.

Meanwhile, the borosilicate catcher on the Bodum Bistro is a significant selling point for ensuring the beans stick to each other and not the catcher. The features build between these two devices offer some different positives and negatives.

However, because of an overall better quality motor for the grinder, which is ultimately the most important feature on a burr grinder, the Baratza Encore wins for build quality.

The Encore has an overwhelmingly impressive 40 grind settings, each of which are easily set on the simple dial at the bottom of the hopper. The Baratza Encore also has a much stronger grinder that, while slower overall, is capable of grinding longer, quieter and with a more fine-tuned grind.

Aesthetics: Baratza Encore vs. Bodum Bistro

Aesthetically speaking, the Baratza Encore vs. Bodum Bistro competition is a tough choice. Both devices have smooth features with an appealing modern look. The Baratza Encore has a somewhat better overall design with an all-black color scheme. The Bodum Bistro’s design looks pleasing, but the red on the buttons provide a bit of an unfortunate contrast to the black coloring.

The Bodum Bistro has a slight edge in that it comes in several different colors to better match a kitchen (like green). Likewise, the varying color schemes work better with the red buttons, making it a bit more versatile for varying customer preferences.

Overall, the physical design on the Baratza Encore gives it a sturdier look. That said, the different color options on the Bodum Bistro give it a slightl edge for aesthetic appeal. In the Bodum Bistro vs Baratza Encore competition for aesthetics, both devices win. Their aesthetic appeals are different, neither offering a better or worse physical presence.
