I'll be the first to admit, I love coffee and the caffeine is a big part of why I love it. Over the years, as I've tried different types of coffee, I couldn't help but notice that not all coffees packed the same caffeine punch. Particularly, travelling posed a challenge because I didn't have my full coffee setup with me. My solution, eventually, was to pack an Aeropress and a small amount of my own coffee. (An upcoming post will be to review the Aeropress in detail, but there are plenty of other reviews on the web already so I'm not exactly discovering any secrets here.)
It got me thinking, however - how do I know the caffeine content of any given coffee? With artificial drinks, they add caffeine during the production process and you can look up how much on the label. Naturally, the caffeine content in coffee is variable by the type of bean and even varies (slightly) bean by bean. Well, it turns out that coffee roasters have begun making claims caffeine content and have even started marketing strong coffees - with tongue firmly in cheek.
What follows is a roundup of the best strong coffees according to Amazon. I have limited the list to the Top 3, and will be updating the content below as I receive and taste each one, in order to give a full review of the coffees I write about here.
I went through many existing reviews, and have compiled a list that shows you the best high caffeine coffee.
The best part of this coffee is that you can try it risk free - if you don't like it, they'll issue you a refund. With a whopping 4.7 stars on 6,700 reviews, this coffee won hands-down. And who doesn't want to drink a coffee with a skull and crossbones logo?
This is a ground coffee, so you're sacrificing the freshness of grinding your own beans just before brew. However, it boasts strong reviews and an average 4.3 stars on 40 reviews.
From the same company, Death Wish, you can also try the Odinforce blend risk-free.
With a whopping 4.7 stars on 3,200 reviews, this coffee won hands-down. Death Wish Coffee Company definitely has a sense of humor - "harness the power of Odin".
A slightly different take on high octane coffee, this one is infused with coffee liqueur, vanilla, and caramel so you can have a flavorful version of strong coffee. Promises to "wake the dead".
The Valhalla Java Odinforce blend comes nicely packaged and includes two stickers - one for the Odinforce and one for Death Wish Coffee. The coffee itself was not quite as caffeinated as I hoped - it produced what I felt was an average caffeine hit compared to my go-to Tanzanian peaberry that I pick up at my local market. I reached out to Death Wish Coffee to learn more about their bean selection process.
We source organic and fair trade Arabica and Robusta beans from India and Peru for our original Death Wish blend. The combination of these beans matched with a unique roasting plan inspired by European roasting results in a specialty dark roast blend that is at least 200% as caffeinated as your average Joe. Beyond being intensely caffeinated, the blend is bold and smooth in flavor with subtle notes of chocolate and dark cherry.
The Valhalla Java is a medium-dark roast and has a mellow, nutty, and sweet flavor profile. With beans sourced from the volcanic soils of Indonesia and nutrient-rich soils of Central and South America, the blend is highly caffeinated, but just a step or two down in caffeine content when compared to the original Death Wish blend. It makes for an awesome afternoon pick-me-up.
